What’s your eating style? What does your eating ’style’ say about you? Perhaps it’s time to take a look at our methodology and make some adjustments!!!

Our Lady of Weight Loss’s Top 11 Eating Styles – yes, I did say that there are 10, but here, today, Our Lady of Weight Loss, the patron saint of permanent fat removal is suggesting an 11th!

1. The Unconscious Eater: If you find yourself covered in cookie crumbs, and do not have any memory of eating cookies, you are an UNCONSCIOUS EATER. WAKE UP! Be in the here and now.

2. Gulp n’ Go: Are you always on the run, doing the ole’ GULP n’ GO? Sit down and take a moment. Please.

3. Food Architect: You are a FOOD ARCHITECT if you sculpt mountains of mashed potatoes, arrange broccoli in and around them like trees, and layer slices of meat until you’ve created a high-rise apartment building. While I admire your creativity, play with Legos instead!

4. Assembly-Line Eater: You are an ASSEMBLY-LINE EATER if you load-up another fork full while still chewing. Put the fork down in between bites.

5. Never Say, “No, Thank You.”: Do you have a NEVER SAY, “NO, THANK YOU” policy in place? Afraid you might offend someone? Time for a re-write.

6. If It’s FREE, It’s for ME: Do you exclaim, “IF IT’S FREE, IT’S FOR ME!” when you see free food tastings and samplings at the supermarket? Eat before food shopping and recommit to your goals before you head out.

7. Closet Eater: You are a CLOSET EATER if you keep a mini-fridge in your coat closet and visit it nightly. Come on out of the closet and join the rest of us. It’s safe out here.

8. Speed Eater: If your friends suggest that you challenge the Japanese world speed-eating champion who swallowed a total of 53 1/2 hot dogs, and their accompanying buns, in just 12 minutes, then you are a SPEED EATER. I’m gagging just thinking about it.

9. Beige-Eater: If potatoes, pasta and mac and cheese are your main stay, then you are a BEIGE-eater. Add red peppers, strawberries, green beans, and bright blueberries to your palate . . . NOW.

10. Fried: You are FRIED if you think ‘fried’ is a food group. Now you know better!

And now, on behalf of Our Lady of Weight Loss, I would like to introduce an 11th Style of Eating, coming to you at the 11th hour, so to speak.

11. Healthy, Plain n’ Simple: Just for a moment try on ‘Healthy’ as your eating style! How does it fit? Most people do not ingest enough vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals on a daily basis. Because our nutrient needs are not met, we lose control and cravings kick in.

Healthy isn’t complicated. In fact, it’s simple. All you need to do is eat more – more fruits and vegetables – more colorful plants. Not only will you lose weight; your health will also dramatically improve.

Here’s some food for thought!

2/3 of Americans are overweight
1/3 of Americans are classified as morbidly obese
50 percent of Americans die of heart attacks and strokes
28 million Americans suffer from the crippling pain of osteoarthritis
35 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches (source: Joel Fuhrman, M.D., author of Eat for Health)

Take one step toward health. Try on ‘healthy’. Eat more! Fruits and vegetables.
Slim down while you live it up!

Spread the healthy word … NOT the icing!

As we lose weight and move from fat to thinner; from unhealthy modes of eating to healthy eating, we run the risk of getting so caught up in the forward thrust and excitement of it all that we forget to say goodbye to what was and fully acknowledge our progress.

Acknowledging what was, the progress that you have made, and the changes that have occurred is an integral part of permanent weight removal (a.k.a. weight loss).

It’s important to slow down and say goodbye to those ounces – one ounce at a time – that have melted away (yes, this is an ounce by ounce happening). In so doing, we create a moment to pause and reflect. We create a space for us to notice the nuances of change; a moment to fully take in our success, which we so often dismiss. “Oh, I only lost one pound this week.”

Saying goodbye ounce by ounce with ‘right thought’ allows us to not only leave the ounces behind but also the negative talk. Yes, as you let go of one ounce, you can along with it let go of one negative thought or belief.

With each ounce that you let go of, take a moment to say, “I thank you for traveling with me thus far, and now I’d like to say good-bye.” You might put your hand on your stomach, your hips or any other part of you that has been holding on to excess weight, as you say this, allowing yourself to get ‘in touch’ with your changing body.

As you do this, you will be freeing yourself to embrace all the changes that come with healthy eating. In this way, we honor who we are in our totality. We cleanse our mind, spirit and body. We clear a space for more healthy change.

Evolve. Don’t just improve.
Janice

Learn more - is your Mouth of Chi blessed or blocked?

The Mouth of Chi* is a term used in Feng Shui*. It references your front door, the primary point of entry into your home (or office or cubicle), whether you favor that door or another. The Mouth of Chi is much like our physical mouth.

Both The Mouth of Chi and your physical mouth are points of entry; both serve as boundaries between “inner” and “outer” worlds. The Mouth of Chi is where energy, people and opportunity enter your home. Your physical mouth takes in food, air, and energy (chi).

If your Mouth of Chi is blocked, cluttered or just plain messy, it can block you from moving forward in life. It can have a negative effect. If it is bright, well lit, cheery and full of positive energy, your life is more likely to flow in a positive way. Good fortune, blessings and opportunities will be yours.

When you fill your physical mouth with unhealthy foods, too much food, or bad air, it will block your energy and have a negative effect on your body. In addition, if you don’t take care of all that is in your mouth (gums, teeth, tongue, et al.), or if your words are peppered with negativity, another type of block will form, and yes – your energy and life flow will be compromised.

Prior to learning about the Mouth of Chi, I confess that I hadn’t give much thought to the importance of ‘point of entry,’ nor had I even considered my physical mouth an entry point or boundary between the ‘inner’ and the ‘outer.’ Now, however, having a different level of awareness, I can’t help but to be mindful and give more thought and meaning to what I put in my mouth and what comes out of it. And you?

Speak right. Eat right. Smile.
Keep your points of entry clean and well lit.

Evolve. Don’t just improve …

If perfectionism is interfering with your life, in any way (weigh), shape (pear shaped or apple) or form, I invite you to consider letting go of this potentially dangerous characteristic.

No one is perfect… that’s why pencils have erasers. ~ Author Unknown

“What’s wrong with perfectionism?” you ask. “PLENTY,” I answer! … which, by the way, makes perfectionism totally imperfect.

Perfection is often linked with achievement, painstaking awareness to detail. Yet, it often produces procrastination (no point in doing something if I can’t do it perfectly), low self-esteem (if I am not perfect, no one will love me), low-productivity and in some cases obsession compulsive disorders, depression, sexual dysfunction, divorce and eating disorders.

Life is full of obstacles, isn’t it? Therefore, life – in it of itself – is imperfect. Trying to be perfect goes against the grain of the natural flow of things, and it results in anxiety and fear of failure.

If perfectionism is interfering with your life, in any way (weigh), shape (pear shaped or apple) or form, I invite you to consider letting go of this potentially dangerous characteristic.

7 Ways to Be Perfectly Imperfect

1. Fake It Till You Make It. It helps to have a willingness, a strong desire to change and a bit of patience as you move through the process. If you are not there yet, that’s okay! You can pretend. Fake it! You will make it!

2. Embrace Fear. Just about everyone says that you have to be FEARLESS. Guess what? Life is scary, fear happens. The trick is to knock it out of your way. When fear rears its ‘interesting’ head (not ugly – don’t want to insult it and make it any bigger), say “Helllooooo fear! Nice to see you. Here’s your hat; what’s your hurry.” In other words, acknowledge it and let it know that you appreciate him/her (in all likelihood ‘fear’ has good intentions), and then (seriously) open a window and door and send him/her out! Do it! Open that door, invite it OUT- empowering feelings will surface, I promise!

3. Practice Imperfection. What things can you do that ‘imperfection’ adds to; that imperfection makes better? How about going to one of those paint your own mug/bowl places. You pick out the ceramic piece, sit at a kid’s table, paint a picture or words, colors, whatever and then they ‘bake’ it for you. Thing is, the paint drips, colors blend. The baking process completely changes the look. You can display it proudly in your home. A symbol of your perfect imperfectness.

4. Try On Excellence. “Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing”. ~ Harriet Beryl. We are here to strive for excellence, to grow, to change, to develop, to go forward, to evolve, not just improve.

5. Envision. Imagine your goals and dreams in great detail. See yourself happy and living just how and where you want to be, in all its glorious imperfection. Write it out. Make it real. And then commit to doing one imperfect thing today that will align you with your tomorrow.

6. Let It Go. Let it go. Let it go. Softly and sweetly, just let the idea of perfection float out into the clouds. (Video coming soon with instructions on how to let it go. Woo hoo.) Perfectionism takes up a lot psychic space. Clear your mind, unchain yourself from perfectionism, and realize that you have just created an amazing opening for freedom and creativity.

7. Nourish imperfectionism. Let us nourish the beginning of this new time in our lives. We have showed sweet perfectionism the door and know that seeds of imperfectionism have been planted. Bless these seeds, allow them to sprout and grow, in their own imperfect way.

Please leave a comment and share your seeds of imperfection. How will you add a tablespoon of delicious and satisfying imperfection to your life today?

Evolve … don’t just change.

Yesterday, I was talking with my new client, Donna*, gathering a bit of background information – her address, phone numbers, email – seriously, nothing ‘heavy,’ just her contact info, at which time, she emphatically blurted out, “I love to cook for my family for the holidays and I’m not giving it up. My mother didn’t cook or bake for us during the holidays when I was a kid, and I’d always wanted her to. So, I cook up and bake up a storm each and every year for my family, and I am not going to stop! My kids, my husband, everyone – they love it. And, I repeat, I am not giving it up!”

“Oh … Okay,” I replied.

Believe me, I had no intentions of asking Donna to give up anything. Far be it from me to ‘take away’ her family’s gastronomically driven happiness or strip her of her identity as the fabulously, wonderful mother whose sweet potato pie and potato pancakes are to die for.

For the record, I am not the food police. Nor, I am in the habit of asking people to give up anything; much less cart away the foods that they think/feel make them the happiest.

Au contraire, I take nothing away! I am all about adding to your life; helping to bring out the best in you, supporting you in finding ways to add copious amounts of health and happiness to add to your daily platter.

Once I fully explained my position, Donna settled in and over the course of the conversation, she said, “I am really annoyed at my son. I asked him if he remembers the wonderful holidays that we’ve shared, and the delicious foods that I whipped up over the years, and he couldn’t remember not even one dish.”

With heaps of loving-kindness and sincere compassion, I gently brought Donna’s attention to the contradiction. I asked, “Donna, why do you think is it that your son can’t recall any of the dishes?”

“Because,” she slowly said, “the food isn’t important to him.” Allowing Donna a moment or two of silence to chew over her thoughts, we sat in silence until she was ready to continue. “Oh my, the only one who deeply cares about the food is me.”

And there you have it. The lid had been removed from that pot. Donna realized that she had more or less painted a Norman Rockwell fantasy. She had woven a beautiful story around the foods that she loves, making it all right for her to cook, serve and eat them. She was being her own ‘good mother,’ giving herself what she’d wished for as a child.

Still, whether or not Donna changes her holiday cooking habits is up to her. Again, I take away nothing from no one!

I am here to do the heavy lifting. The lifting of the lids that cover beliefs and stories that are no longer useful or even true.

Evolve. Don’t just improve.

Janice

*The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
And yes, permission granted by client to use story.

Tell me something new? Please!" width="400" height="452" />Even though I know that you know, even thought you’ve heard it before, I feel compelled to revisit ‘breakfast,’ because …

After forty years (yes 40!) of breakfast related studies that show without a doubt that kick-starting your day with breakfast is the healthy thing to do – for children and adults alike – people still say . . .

“Oh, I just don’t have the time for breakfast!”
Really? How much time does it take to down a bowl of cereal or a container of yogurt with a bit of fresh fruit? Or a hard-boiled egg, for that matter?

“I’m not hungry in the morning.”
What time do you eat dinner? 10 p.m.? Midnight?

“Skipping breakfast is a part of my diet plan.”
Studies show that eating breakfast will actually help you to reach and maintain your healthy weight.

“I don’t like breakfast.”
There’s no rule about what ‘breakfast food’ is or is not! You could eat lunch for breakfast or dinner for lunch or breakfast for dinner. Get creative.

Here’s why YOU should eat breakfast!
After eight to twelve hours of NOT eating (fasting!), your body is ready to and needs to refuel its glucose levels (a.k.a. blood sugar). Glucose is the main energy source for your brain, and it helps fuel your muscles that move you through your day. Those who skip breakfast often find themselves feeling tired, restless, irritable and scattered.

Whether in the process of removing those excess pounds or maintaining your healthy weight, breakfast is very important! It helps to curb your hunger and breakfast can help to prevent binge eating later in the day. At the end of the day, those who eat breakfast consume less calories, are thinner and tend to be healthier than those who do not eat breakfast.

And for you moms out there … kids who eat breakfast do better in school, are more alert and can concentrate better than the kids who skip the most important meal of the day!

Breakfast Ideas!

A breakfast that ranges between 250-350 calories can keep you sated for hours!

• Ready-to-eat whole grain cereal topped with fruit and yogurt.
• Whole-grain waffles topped with one tablespoon of peanut butter, fruit and or ricotta cheese.
• Whole-wheat pita stuffed with sliced hard-boiled eggs, lettuce and tomato.
Sardines (in mustard sauce, my fav) on whole-wheat crackers (or stuff that pita again!).
• Steel Cut Oatmeal topped with fresh fruit.
• Breakfast smooth (whirl up a milk, fruit and bran combo in your blender)
• Omelet (egg-white or otherwise) with copious amount of veggies, an orange on the side with a slice of whole wheat toast.

Your Health Matters!

Spread the word … NOT the icing,

Ellen quit. Kara was fired. Jennifer Lopez was hired. Steven Tyler, too. And Randy Jackson is the last judge standing. True or false?

Ellen quit! I’m not surprised. Are you? Do you remember when Simon told Oprah that when Ellen signed on to do Idol, she had no idea that Simon was about to drop his “I’m outta here” bombshell? She started the day he quit, more or less. Imagine that! I’m betting that she decided to do one season right then and there. Just my astute observation.

Kara fired?
Further … on the hot carpet, TMZ.com reports that Kara DioGuardi was fired from Idol, and that American Idol is reportedly returning to their three-judge format, which includes Randy Jackson.

I suspect that they are keeping Randy on, not because he’s the hottest dawg since sliced bread, but rather so that some semblance of continuity and comfort remain. Three new judges would be too jarring.

Jennifer Lopez? Steven Tyler?
As I hear it, the three judges are Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

But wait, what about P Diddy?
P Diddy, a.k.a. Sean Combs, told George Lopez on his show Lopez Tonight, that he would love the job.

“At first when people were asking me if I was interested in the job I was like no … that’s not my style, but once I heard what Simon makes … [I] would love the job. . . . . I’ve got six kids. If I would get the same check Simon gets … we would have a ball.”

A word to P Diddy – P. do you really need more to have a ball with your six kids?

At the end of the day, the name of the show is American Idol. And I am hoping that the contestants are compelling enough, both in song and story, to carry the show forward. Remember when Fantasia sang Stormy Weather? I’m seriously hungry for more of that!

What are you hungry for? What shows curb your nighttime eating? What shows keep you out of the kitchen and away from the fridge?

Instead of the sound and motion of gurgling water activating positive chi energy, bringing in prosperity and good luck, the fountain furiously spurted and spit water on my desktop.

Every once in awhile, I plugged it in and played with the wire, pulling it to the left and then the right, hoping for less sputtering. But, no. Spatter it did, and so, there it sat, stagnating in the corner of my office, until this morning, when my husband wandered in and casually inquired. “Why isn’t your fountain plugged in?”

He then lifted the top, took the tiny engine in his hand and simply moved the setting from high to low. Fixed! A miracle! Water flowing, soothing sounds, happy and energized chi filled the room.

And now I wonder. How many other ‘things’ in my life could be adjusted by simply moving a switch from high to low, or low to high, or on or off. How many simple adjustments could be made that would add flow and balance to my life?

Sometimes all we need to do to move from stuck to unstuck is change our setting.
