21 Tips: The Thanksgiving Survival Guide
The Thanksgiving Calorie Guide
The Thanksgiving Prayer

And today, an extra added bonus!!!!

They bring you The Thanksgiving Survival Kit!
Janice shares, “It is our intent to prepare our fans to get through Thanksgiving, the big food day, the big family day, the big ‘mom’s gonna’ push my buttons’ day,’ fully prepared and armed!”

What will you bring to Thanksgiving that can help you navigate the screaming children? What will you bring that will keep you strong and able to say ‘no thank you’ to the heavily spiked Egg Nog when the slings and arrows of miss-communication are being sent your way? Seriously?!

If you think that I’m kidding, I am NOT! I have spend an entire week on the telephone talking to Weight Loss Coaching clients who are telling it like it is. The TRUTH! Concerned that they will go on a ‘food’ bender or worse! Some are unnerved by their controlling mother-in-laws (not my daughter-in-law – by the way), some by the screaming 4 and 5 year olds; some worried that comments will be made about the way they look – good or bad – IT IS charged! The anxiety is mounting and I say get ‘thy holiday survival kit’ together!

THE THANKSGIVING SURVIVAL KIT!

1. Meditation Music. Should you feel unnerved by anyone or anything, simply slip away, iPod in hand, to the bathroom. Lock yourself in and tune in to some meditation music! Take in a few deep breaths. Return to room when you are fully charged and returned to center!

2. Lights, Action, Camera. Taking photos will not only serve to record the day for future generations, but the camera acts as a butter – oops, Freudian slip … I mean BUFFER!!! It literally puts you in a place of observation. Note all with humor! Snap away happily.

3. Recorder. Last year, my 93 year-old mother, after 3 sips of Manichewitz, revealed some very hot details from her youth. Had I only had a recorder! A golden opportunity missed to record her in all her glory and in her voice!

4. Jigsaw Puzzle. Bring a puzzle and dump it on a table in the corner of the room. You have now created the official ‘drop in’ center. Drop in and play … drop out and return to bigger group.

5. Games n’ Puzzles for the Kids. Needless to say, if you’ve got a puzzle you’re working on, the little ones are going to want to play, too. So bring games n’ puzzles up the gazoo for the kids! Keep ‘em busy and happy.

6. Hand Project. Crochet, knit, needlepoint, pen and pad … whatever! Hand projects not only keep your hands and mind away from food, but they are calming. Best anti-anxiety medicine ever!!!

7. Walking Shoes. Not only is it okay to head out for a spell and take a walk, it’s a good idea. If you need some alone time, be sure to head out alone!!! (I am giving you permission to take care of yourself!) And if you want to take the lead and invite others for a bit of fresh air, do so!

Think outside of the stuffed turkey!
What are you going to put into your Thanksgiving Survival Kit?! Pack NOW!

Spread the word … NOT the icing!
Janice

How to make it through the holidaze glaze without falling off the wagon and setting off a 10-year detour!

Today I’d like to share with you my 21 Tips: Thanksgiving Survival Guide. The tips range from food tips to family fun and mental health! Each and every tip is powerful in it of itself, and together – well ‘fuhgeddaboudit!’ Mind and fat-blowing!!!!

I saved my most powerful tip (#21) till the end. It is the secret to my permanently ‘removing’ over 50 pounds 8 years ago. However, be forewarned: it carries 21 times the power if you read through the first twenty tips first!

21 Tips: Thanksgiving Survival Guide

1. Manage Your Expectations: For whatever the reason, when it comes to the holidays, our expectations are often over the moon out of whack. We have preconceived notions on how the dinner should be, the conversation should sound, how people should act and how we should feel. Somehow or another, we still hold in our heart that our family gathering – the holidays – will be a Norman Rockwell painting come to life. No problems, just flowing love. If you want to make you holiday celebration easier, then lower and manage your expectations now. The less you are disappointed, the more you are likely to appreciate and enjoy the day.

2. Forget Perfection. The holiday is just like any other day. It will have its ups and downs. There is no perfect day much less perfect holiday.

3. Expect Change. As the years pass, children become young adults; young adults become adults. New people enter the picture and the family composition often changes. And with all these changes, so go the rituals. Be open for new people and new ideas.

4. No One Has Read the Script You’ve Written for Them. Nor have you read the script they have written for you! If someone says something that irritates you, let it go.

5. Play Nice All Year. Imagine how lovely it would be if we all appreciated each other every day of the year, instead of just one or two!

6. Food Accessories. Trim the Trimmings, Shave the Calories. Just as you wouldn’t want to wear a bracelet, necklace, earrings, pins, and a scarf; go easy on your ‘food accessories.’ There are lots of ‘food accessories’ that we add to a meal, which in turn add hundreds of calories to each and every meal. Go light on the nuts, cheese, cream sauces, gravy, butter, dressings, and whipped cream.

7. Club Soda In One Hand, A Napkin in the other! If you are holding a drink, preferably water, in one hand, and a napkin in the other, it makes those tastes and nibbles a lot more difficult!

8. Speaking of Nibbles. Appetizers can run anywhere from 50 to 300 calories a pop. Chew on that!

9. Be Discriminating. Eat only what you love. Before you dive into that greasy bowl of whatever, ask yourself, “Is it worth it?”

10. Savor the flavor. Enjoy the sweet, the sour, the salty … be one with your food.

11. Eat Until Sated. This is not The Last Supper. There’s more in the kitchen. Eat until you are sated, not until overly full or stuffed.

12. No Starving Oneself Allowed. Eat! People often make the big mistake of thinking, “I’ll skip lunch and save calories for the party I’m going to tonight.” This strategy rarely works and it is likely to blow up in your face. If too hungry, you are likely to lose control.

13. Don’t Pile It High. Pace Yourself. If you are going to partake in the appetizers, how about taking one on your plate a time.

14. No Closet Eating. Whatever you are going to eat, eat it out in the open! No sneaking. No lies!

15. To Drink or Not to Drink. Limit the booze, baby! Alcohol, a Trigger? Alcoholic drinks are loaded with calories, especially the sweet drinks and the eggnogs! And they are likely to lower your inhibitions and might trigger you to eat more than you really want to.

16. No Elastic Waist Bands Allowed. Go Snug. You really don’t want to leave room for expansion, do you? For goodness sake, wear fitted clothing. Studies show you’ll eat less and have a more realistic take on what’s happening in the ‘waist’ department.

17. Go Active. Plan activities. The holidays aren’t always about food, are they? They are about enjoying each other’s company, having fun, laughter! Think outdoor games: sledding, skating, badminton, horseshoes. Indoor fun: bowling, indoor skating rinks, dancing!

18. Games Galore. More play time. How about a spirited game of cards, charades, or even musical chairs! Make a list of your favorite games!

19. Hand Hobbies. Keep your hands and mind busy with crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, or by being a foto-food journalist. Photograph the food – or your family. It’s difficult to eat and purl one at the same time.

20. Practice Loving Kindness. Be kind to others and yourself. No name calling (like fat pig). Love, love and love yourself some more!

21. All Is Forgiven. Move On. This time is my time and it can be your time, too, if – when you fall off the wagon – you get up and dust your self off and repeat Our Lady of Weight Loss’s most powerful mantra: “All is forgiven. Move on.”

22. BONUS TIP! All Is Forgiven, Move On is also the title of Our Lady of Weight Loss’s book that has received rave reviews from the major daily newspapers and from Judith Beck, M.D. … Give yourself and a friend the gift of permanent fat removal this year!

Here, she shares her secret on "How to Be a Happy Idiot."

Woo Hoo, I am so excited to be alive!!! Well – the truth of the matter is this…

This morning, just as my eyes were fluttering their way to open, in that moment between sleep and wake, I tuned into my thoughts and heard myself say “Crap, it’s time to get up.”

I know from experience (as I’m sure we all do) that when we start the day on a ‘crappy’ note, it makes it that much more difficult to muster up enough energy to make the best choices, food or otherwise!

So … in that moment of hearing myself ‘crap out,’ I turned it around.
I remembered that – for starters – I am alive! Blessed with yet another beautiful fall day in NYC. Happy to write you! I made a mental note of 5 things that I am genuinely grateful for, and my energy began to bubble up happy.

And then … I tuned into the most delightful video: “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” from Ren & Stimpy, featuring the best ever Monty Python song.

Joyously, can I now report to you that I am officially a happy idiot! I invite you to join with me!

Three Easy Steps: How to Be a Happy Idiot!
1. Think a happy thought.
2. Look at the bright side of life.
3. Watch this video. Again!

Seriously, it’s relatively easy to change your mind, your point of view, your thoughts, your feelings. The more difficult part is to remember to do so!

How will you remember to wake up happy?

Sometimes they are extremely positive, sometimes over the top negative. Sometimes they are critical of others and ourselves. Sometimes deceptive. Oh yes, the lies we tell ourselves! We use words to justify our existence and apologize for our actions! And sometimes the words that pass over our lips and out into the universe have a beautiful ripple affect. Truth. Acceptance. Love.

“The wise weigh their words on a scale with gold.” ~ The Bible

I invite you to weigh your words today! Notice them. What effect do they have on your actions? Your mood? Are they worth their weight in gold, or would you prefer to trade them in for something more or less positive?

I love words … send me yours! Weigh-in here. What insights might you have from the words you use?

The Holiday Dieter’s SHE-DEVIL is on the prowl! She revealed herself to me yesterday, while placing my ‘baked goods’ Thanksgiving order at the best bakery in all of NYC!

Yes, for those whose eyebrows are arching, I was at the best ever bakery in NYC yesterday … putting in my order per my family’s request for the best Sweet Potato Pie and Rhugelach ever. I do it every year and it’s not a problem come Thanksgiving Day.

I plan ahead and know that I am going to have a sliver of pie and a bite of the Rughelach (it’s sooo rich, a bite is plenty) ahead of time. And I am always plenty satisfied. Not a red light food; again not the problem.

The PROBLEM is the Holiday Dieter’s SHE-DEVIL who appeared in the body of this very lovely woman named, “Miss T,” who was warm, sweet and delicious and who was offering samples.

It is the UNEXPECTED that sometimes gets me!!! And truth be told, if I wanted to justify my actions, I could have. After all, I literally walked a mile to the bakery and was going to walk the one mile back home after I placed my order!

BUT I remembered that it is NO EXCUSES NOVEMBER and that I am ME, a person who is not attached, in love with or addicted to food, any longer.

So I simply said, “No thank you.”
Needless to say, Miss T. persisted.

A calm, sweetness came over me, and I put my hand across the counter, took her hand in mine, and I said, “Noooooo, thankkkkkk you. I am going to wait and savor the flavor on Thanksgiving.”

Thankfully, Miss T. was sated, satisfied, filled with my promising words. She loved that I was going to wait and savor the flavor come Thanksgiving. (Kind of like a virgin, waiting???? oh sorry, so inappropriate!)

Anyway … I wanted to alert you to the FACT that the DIETER’S SHE DEVIL is OUT THERE, prowling, embodying the persona of nice people. She is out to get YOU! How will you outwit THE DIETER’s SHE DEVIL????

Both Our Lady of Weight Loss and Janice Taylor are determined to change the ‘fat tide,’ and enable you to Wake Up Thinner!

Cravings are like clouds. They roll in with the winds and out, as well. Generally, the ‘crave cloud cycle’ lasts about 15 minutes. As soon as you see a “Crave Cloud” headed your way, how will you handle it? What will you do to ride it out?

Here are some hot ‘fat-burning’ tips straight from the OLofWL Permanent Fat Removal factory.

1. Call a friend. Choose wisely! And talk about LIFE not food!
2. Take a brisk walk. And breathe in clean air (hard to come by in my neighborhood!)
3. Brush your teeth (floss, too, while you’re at it). Your dentist is gonna’ love you.
4. Journal it out of your system. Pen to paper vs. hand to mouth!
5. Drink water. Flush that craving out of you!
6. Jump up and down. And clap, too. Clap, clap, clap. Yay! Get the energy moving!!!
7. Dance to the music.
8. Relax dammit! Take a hot bath.
9. Visualize your goals. See yourself thinner come January 1.

And my best and most secret defense against “The Craving!”

10. Eat dill pickles. They are zero calories! Have plenty of taste for your craving buds! YUM Delicious, Our Lady of Weight Loss approved! … and then brush your teeth and floss again!!!

Remember. You are a Weight Loss Warrior! Your ability to ride these cravings out is stronger and stronger every day. If I can, YOU CAN!

Spread the word … NOT the icing,
Janice

Eating Slowly Translates to Pounds Lost! Here is one thing you can do today that will help you gracefully and sveltely move through the holiday season.

Chew Slowly and Savor the Flavor – Research shows that those who slow down while eating and savor the flavor, eat less than those who gulp and stuff.

In a recent study conducted by the University of Rhode Island, scientists found that when eating quickly women consumed 646 calories in approximately nine minutes. When they ate slowly, they averaged 579 calories in 29 minutes!

Get it? They ate 67 calories more in nine minutes than they did in 29 minutes! In addition, those who slowed down and savored the flavor, enjoyed their meal and felt satisfied on multiple levels!

One thing you can do today and every day including the day of the BIRD BIRD!
Slow Down … Savor the Flavor!

Janice Taylor and Our Lady of Weight Loss team up to bring you the best HOLIDAY DIET TIPS EVER that will help you to WAKE UP THINNER on New Year's Day. Chew on that!

Be forewarned: Perfectionism can lead to:

Low self-esteem (if I am not perfect, no one will love me),
Low-productivity and in some cases obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD),
Procrastination (no point in doing something if I can’t do it perfectly)
Depression,
Sexual dysfunction,
Divorce, and
DUMPING THE DIET … a.k.a. giving up!

Give up the ALL or NOTHING Mentality NOW! Trying to be perfect goes against the grain of the natural flow of life. If the ALL or NOTHING WEIGH OF THINKING is interfering with your life, in any way (weigh), shape (pear shaped or apple) or form (extra rolls around your middle), I invite you to consider letting go of this potentially dangerous approach, that is only going to lead you to a crash and burn failure (again)!

Go with the 80/20 Plan!
On occasion, you will find that you are a little to the right or left of your food plan. Could
be it’s your birthday (or mine), or you ordered steamed vegetables NO sauce, and ‘they’ delivered it with sauce. If your healthy living plan is too rigid, you will crack! Plain and simple. Don’t crack. Be flexible.
