The Elder Care Blues: Things Could Be Worse … and they will be !!!

February 21st, 2012

The thing about life is that life has a life of its own, and you just never know when ‘life’s life’ is going to show up and where ‘it’ is going to take you.   For the most part the unexpected twists n’ turns are a mere blip in your day, barely noticeable.

For example:  You plan on wearing your black jeans, but they’re in the wash, so you grab your blue jeans.  You plan on going to a movie, but when you get there, it’s sold out.  No biggie.

There are the happy twists n’ turns.  You go to a party and run into an old friend and marry him (not that night, but soon thereafter). You go on a trip to Chicago and unexpectedly connect to a gaggle of long lost cousins. (Best kind of family; little to no history but still family.) You permanently remove bucket loads of excess weight, create a website to share your experience and – holy cowgirls – a publisher asks you if you’d like to write a book. (All true.)

And then, there is the other kind of twist n’ turn; the type of twist that turns you inside out and upside-down and is not particularly welcomed.  Just as my husband, Peter, and I were making our final plans to spend a few open-ended months in Tucson without concern of a return date (a mini/semi-retirement for him — my work is portable), just as I was incredulously saying, “OMG! This is incredible!  We can go and come as we please. Can you believe it??”

Just as I bellowed from the deepest part of my soul, “Freedom!” a la Mel Gibson in Braveheart (I forgive you, Mel, for your lame-brained remarks), my fully independent, still living on her own, 95-year-young mother fell, not once — but twice — and…

…The world of elder care came crashing down upon us.

Peter and I rushed to the hospital where we found my mom — whose name is, by the way, Harriet — behind the emergency room curtain, lying lonely on the hospital bed. I asked, “Are you all right?”

Harriet replied in her usual witty and wry style, “Things could be worse… and they will be.”

We laughed. “Things could be worse… and they will be” is one of my mother’s signature sayings.

When I was five, Jimmy S. tripped me. (Intentionally?)  My chin cracked open (I have the scar to prove it), and by the time I made my way home, my pretty-in-plaid kindergarten dress was bloodied up.

Mom said in a somewhat playful yet serious tone, “Ohhhh.  Things could be worse.” She followed this with a sympathetic smile and a half-chuckle. “And they will be.”

When my 6-year-old neighbor decided to practice his barber skills on my favorite doll, Patty Playpal, and cut off her long locks much to my distress, my mom once again said, “Things could be worse… and they will be.”

So mom fell, not once but twice, and “things” surely could have been worse.   Her elbow was fractured; the crown of her head was cracked open just a tad, leaving a small gash; and she was pretty much a bruised-up mess.  But she did not break her hip, no surgery was needed and she still has all her marbles, which was a very good thing.

Naively, I thought, “A few weeks of rehab and life will return to normal.” Boy-oh-boy was I wrong!  The words, “Things could be worse… and they will be” have taken on new meaning.

As the weeks passed, it became abundantly clear that we were looking at a “new and lesser normal,” and that the day had arrived. My mom, 95.5 years young, who had lived happily in her Long Beach apartment for 31 years, was not going home.

Elder care is a minefield of logistics and a roller coaster of emotions. As I stated, our scenario is not the worst ever, but nevertheless it is madly overwhelming.

Madly is defined as wildly, fiercely.  Its synonyms include absurdly, crazily, dementedly, desperately, exceedingly, frantically, frenziedly, hastily, irrationally, passionately, psychotically, senselessly, unreasonably, violently… Eldercare is all that and more.

One way I have been channeling my emotions, processing the daily happenings and seeing the opportunity in this journey (Yes, there’s plenty of opportunity here for personal growth, including but not limited to surrender, compassion and humor) is to fast and furiously send emails to my real and “chosen” family.

These missives, which ranged from “three-tissue reads” to “side-splitting belly laughs,” have proven to be an enormously therapeutic tool (for me), and the information and entertainment factor useful and even enjoyable for the family, which brings me here — to this page, and to YOU!

I know there are plenty of “us” caretakers out there, and we are stressed! According to a recent study from the American Psychological Association, 55 percent of caretakers are just “plain” stressed, and 22 percent are “extremely” stressed.

It is my intention to share my journey on these pages and to keep it real, which means telling the entire truth, not just the more sane and happier slices of it.  I think the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me G_d, is necessary here.

This isn’t about me.  True — writing to you all is a most excellent way for me to empty my mind and vent about the happenings in my life; but I am merely one of the very many boomers who are currently navigating (or will be soon enough) the strange, alien, frustrating and frankly, insane world of elder care.  Skimping on the truth wouldn’t be helpful or fair.

So… Here “we” go.  I am reaching out to you for support and at the same time offering support.  I am hopeful that you will seize this opportunity to empty your mind, tell your truth — comment below — so that we can, together, face this bittersweet time and help prepare those who are to follow.

Heat Stoke: Hot and Bothered with Vampire Eric Northman

July 21st, 2011

This morning I needed to get to from Point A to Point B, and I felt like walking.  Never mind the headline, “Boiling Heat Refuses to Simmer.”  So what if the temperature is going to hit 100.

As I walked, I thought of Eric Northman, the fictional character from the TV show True Blood.  Eric is a Vampire.  As we all know, sunlight destroys vampires, unless of course they have sucked a Fairy dry.

Last episode, Eric sucked Sookie’s Fairy Godmother dry!  Filled up and high on fairy blood, he headed outdoors.  Standing in full sunlight he reveled in the ecstasy of the heat and the daylight.

As all good things must come to an end, so did the effects of the Fairy Blood.  Eric began to blister, burn and sizzle.  He had to hightail it out of the sun, and get back to his underground lightless dungeon.

I lasted a good eight blocks, before I started to overheat.  Similar to Eric’s experience, once the heat started to take hold, I went from fine to fried in less than one quick second.   I ducked into a market, re-hydrated, cooled down and then, took a fast and air-conditioned taxi home!  (Praise Be for New York City Taxis)

On these hot and humid days of summer, you may feel fine and be actually enjoying the extreme heat, but beware, because both heat exhaustion and heatstroke can sneak up on you, come on fast and knock you over and out!

The symptoms of heat exhaustion are:

Profuse sweating
Muscle cramps
Cool, clammy skin
Dizziness

What to do?
Grab yourself some shade.
Drink water.
Rest for a good 15 minutes.

Heatstroke is another matter and is life threatening.
The symptoms are:

victim may be confused,
hallucinating and/or
lose consciousness.
His/her skin will be hot and dry,
and his/her body may have lost its ability to self-cool.

What to do?
Call 911 and ask for medical assistance.
While waiting for an ambulance (Yikes),
move the heatstroke victim out of the sun and into the shade or into a cooler place.
Give her/him water.
If you have anything that can be used as a fan, get fanning!

Before you head out into the sun, into these hot and humidv100 degree days of summer, grab a hat, sunglasses and water!  Walk on the shady side of the street!

Chewing the Fat – What do YOUR FAT CELLS want YOU to CHANGE???

May 11th, 2011

Dear Our Lady of Weight Loss ~ What do you do after you lose weight (almost 100 lbs), and then start gaining it back (almost 30 lbs. back)?  I am still working out, which is a good thing. How do I get my weight loss groove back???????? It was almost effortless before.  I so realize that weight is an emotional manifestation. ~ Brenda S.

Dear Brenda ~ Permanent weight removal vs. losing it and finding it again is a multi-layered process.  Here are a few tips that may help you shed ‘lite’ on the topic!  Good Luck!!! And DO, please keep us in your loop. and … YES, Kudos to you, Brenda, for keeping up with your exercise! Fabulous!!!  ~ Janice (dictated but not ready by Our Lady of Weight Loss)

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
What your character, for it becomes your destiny.

Brenda wants to know how to get motivated and stay motivated; how to get her upward spiral in motion forever more.  I’m sure that speaks to many of us, yes?

Here follow a few tips on how to get motivated on a daily basis as well as a few question coaching questions that are designed to ‘blow the fat cells out of your mind. How to Get Your Upward Spiral in Motion …

1.  Stay Motivated? People have the misconception that once motivated it will last. To quote the great motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” Ask yourself each and every morning, “What will I do today to motivate myself?” A powerful question, indeed.

2. Consider Moving Toward.
Rather than pushing away from not liking yourself, pushing away from being disgusted; how about creating a dazzlingly inspired vision of your future?  What are you moving toward?

I’ve shared this excerpt from my book – All Is Forgiven, Move On – before.  Because it is such an important aspect of permanent weight loss, I am going to share it again.

Have you ever watched an Olympic swimmer push off the side of the pool? It is quite amazing, isn’t it? The thrust, the power, their determination is enormous. Often the strength of this one solitary push can propel the Olympian right straight into the middle of the Olympic-sized pool.

When we decide to go on a ‘diet,’ we essentially push off from the side of the ‘pool of discontent.’ We gather a vast amount of energy from not liking ourselves, being disgusted, and ashamed of how we look. We don’t like ourselves. No, we sure don’t.

Sometimes this energy takes us half way to our goal weight. Sometimes all the way … 10, 20, 30, 100, 200 pounds lost. Then what?

Unlike the Olympic swimmer who has a plan; who is moving toward her big win; who sees herself as a champion and knows with every cell and fiber of her being that she is the victor, we only know ourselves to be losers. We are basing this attempt on past attempts to lose, which have failed.

It is easy to get lost if you don’t know where you are going. If you want to be victorious at the game of Permanent Fat Removal, then you need to have a compelling future. You need to know where you are going; what you want; what removing those pounds means. The diet and exercise plans do not live alone. This is a holistic event. It’s about your life, not your fat.

The number of lessons, here, are numerous.
What are you moving toward? What does your compelling future look like?

3.  What Are You Thinking? We have approximately 70,000 thoughts per day. There are 86,400 seconds per day, which means that we have a thought ever 1.2 seconds.  Many of these thoughts, if not most, are repetitive and tend toward negativity.  It is the nature of mind.  It is important to get hip to your thoughts and ask yourself, “How do I know that thought is true?  Where did this belief come from?”

4.  Actions Follow Thoughts. Your actions spring from your thoughts.  Think about it!   When you are about to take an action that is clearly not in alignment with your goals, stop and do your best to remember the thought that preceded the action.   In so doing, you have an opportunity to change your thought and your action.

5.  It’s NOT about the FAT; It’s about YOUR LIFE. Your excess weight is merely a symptom of something that is out of balance; that needs to change.  What in your life is out of balance?  What are your fat cells saying to you?  Might they keep multiplying, because you are not listening?

How ‘loud’ does it have to get before you make a meaningful change?  How loud does it have to get before you explore your beliefs, your thoughts, and get honest with yourself about what is going on?

What is it that your fat cells want you to change?

It’s TIME! Let YOUR Weight Loss Warrior Out!

April 18th, 2011

I have in the past written about the difference between being assertive and aggressive – and advocated for the assertive side of life – stating that there’s no need to bring the police into the picture!!!!  (Referencing an incident I had –or created, depending on your point of view – in an Italian restaurant in Little Italy, at which time I specifically said at a minimum of three times, “NO BUTTER!”  Nevertheless, when served, my food was swimming in butter! It got ugly!).

However, I was WRONG. True enough, although it is the first time that I’m wrong!  But I’m woman enough to admit it.

There is nothing wrong with being AGGRESSIVE.  In fact, it is the RIGHT PATH!!!  It is the WAY of the WEIGHT LOSS WARRIOR!!!!

AGGRESSIVE ENERGY

Aggressive energy is an essential part of being human.  Aggressive energy will always be with you.  It is an integral and meaningful part of you and it is up to you whether or not you use it for good or ill or even worse, deny it altogether.

When you deny aggression, you are abdicating tapping into this natural and vital well of energy and power.  It is your natural resource that can make all the difference.

The aggressive energy that rumbles through you is simply the Warrior within that is thirsting to accept responsibility, wanting to come out and lead YOU to victory!

You have, in our time together, made the decision to permanently remove your excess weight; you have looked into your future; filled up on confidence; spoken words that energize and motivate; fed the soul and the body and now …

It is TIME!!! To let YOUR WARRIOR OUT!!!!

YOUR WARRIOR … gets things done!
… gives you a sense of yourself as Champion of Your Vision.
… slays the dragons of fear and doubt.
… is inspired and optimistic.
And when your warrior runs into obstacles your warrior recognizes them as tests and does not abandon her Quest …
… YOUR WARRIOR … battles on.

Your warrior … perseveres in the face of difficulties, in the face of temptation.

Good Intentions Are NOT ENOUGH. Sacrifice is necessary.

How you and your warrior bond together now will determine the outcome of your story.

Will you live your best life, or will you remain in bondage to food, emotional eating, and the circumstances that life throws in your path?

Your Warrior actually enjoys discipline, planning, and boundaries.  Your Warrior does not stamp its feet and act like a 4 year-old; your warrior sees the above as opportunity to live life to the fullest.

Be a Warrior.  Be a Weight Loss Warrior.

Rise and Grind Wednesday: Is Your Toothpaste Toxic?

March 24th, 2011

“Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age.  If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a poison control center right away.”

Want to guess what item in your house has the above warning label adhered to it in plain sight?

According to the new book The Healthy Home by Dr. Myron Wentz and Dave Wentz, that hit the bookshelves just yesterday, “It is the required warning that appears on every tube of fluoridated toothpaste manufactured in the United States.  The FDA began requiring this warning in the late ‘90s when it became clear that small children could be seriously injured – or even killed – by fluoride poisoning.”

Ingesting fluoride toothpaste can be fatal, and yet many local governments have passed legislation requiring fluoridation of water supplies.  In addition, it can also cause damage to your teeth’s enamel.

Huh? What?  True enough!

According to the authors, it is the physical activity of brushing your teeth that actually cleans them.  So next time you go shopping for toothpaste, you might want to buy the non-fluoride brand.

For cleanest teeth – brush twice daily, floss and scrape your tongue!

For more practical and accessible health advice, and information on what products to buy and avoid, check out The Healthy Home.

What’s Your Favorite Elizabeth Taylor Quote?

March 24th, 2011

Elizabeth Taylor, an extraordinary talented actress, who is also remembered for her beauty, brains, courage, and wit, throughout the years offered both honest and wise quotes.

What’s your favorite quote?  Please weigh-in below, and if your favorite is not here, please do add it!!!

When people say, ‘She’s got everything’, I’ve got one answer – I haven’t had tomorrow.
Big girls need big diamonds.

I fell off my pink cloud with a thud.

It’s not the having, it’s the getting.

I’ve been through it all, baby, I’m mother courage.

Some of my best leading men have been dogs and horses.

I’ve always admitted that I’m ruled by my passions.

Success is a great deodorant.

I don’t pretend to be an ordinary housewife.

My mother says I didn’t open my eyes for eight days after I was born, but when I did, the first thing I saw was an engagement ring. I was hooked.

Balanced Life: How to Swab Down the Mental Decks

March 21st, 2011

The winter is over (hip hip hooray), and I’ve started my spring cleaning!  I’m not just cleaning out the closets and sweeping the tumbleweed dust balls from under the bed but also working on my clutter filled mind. Yup, my mind is filled with an assortment of – for want of a better word – crap that is blocking my energy, my focus – even my resolve.

Want to swab down the mental decks with me? Clean out the guilt, regret, anger, worry and who knows what else that is crammed into the corners of our minds? These thoughts are affecting our physical well-being, as well as zapping our energy. Cleaning out the cobwebs frees us up for productive thoughts, allows our ideas to flow easily and creates luscious feelings of spaciousness.

Step One: FORGIVENESS. Forgive someone else and/or yourself. Be merciful. Clean out the anger, jealousy, self-doubt. If it is not possible to make amends with another (or self), in your mind’s eye imagine filling up a dump truck with these pieces of anger, slices of jealousy, remnants of self-doubt, and take them and leave them at the junk heap in the sky. Take Our Lady of Weight Loss’s motto is “All Is Forgiven, Move On” to heart. Forgive and move on.

Step Two: LET GO OF THE PAST. Move into the present. If you are reliving your yesterdays, you are missing your todays. Stop for a moment. Take in a deep breath and on the out breath, let go of the past. Ahhhh.

Step Three: ATTITUDINAL ADJUSTMENT. Start with feelings of gratitude. Practice giving instead of taking; share and share some more. Simply experience the blue sky, the green grass, the joy of just being alive.

Step Four: LIGHTEN UP. Laugh it up, lighten your thoughts. Make time for fun each and every day.

How might you lighten your mental load?

Forks and Knives

What has happened to us? Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure.

Chew on these facts!
… and then … WAKE UP!!! to the truth and do something about it!

1. Two out of every three of us are overweight.
2. Cases of diabetes are exploding, especially amongst our younger population.
3. About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug.
4. Major medical operations have become routine, helping to drive health care costs to astronomical levels.
5. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country’s three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to “battle” these very conditions. Millions suffer from a host of other degenerative diseases.

Could it be there’s a single solution to all of these problems? A solution so comprehensive yet so straightforward, that it’s mind-boggling that more of us haven’t taken it seriously?

FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called “diseases of affluence” that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.

Could it be that degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost be prevented and in many cases reversed simply by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet?

Despite the profound implications of the findings of Drs. Campbell and Esselstyn, their work has remained relatively unknown to the public. In FORKS OVER KNIVES, filmmakers travel with these two doctors on their separate but similar paths, from their childhood farms where they both produced “nature’s perfect food”; to China and Cleveland, where they explored ideas that challenged the established thinking and shook their own core beliefs.

The idea of food as medicine is put to the test. Throughout the film, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes. Doctors teach these patients how to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments–while the challenges and triumphs of their journeys are revealed.

FORKS OVER KNIVES utilizes state of the art 3-D graphics and rare archival footage. The film features leading experts on health, examines the question “why we don’t know”, and tackles the issue of diet and disease in a way that will have people talking for years.

FORKS OVER KNIVES was filmed all over the United States, and in Canada and China. It premieres in May! Get Ready … to spread the healthy word!
